Hi, here can you search for many answers about the ColecoVision 2 / CV2.
You ask your questions via
AtariAge.com, or via OpCode Games and Eduardo will personal reply.
You can read them assembled here.
Questions and answers are shortened slightly.

OpCode Games Presents: ColecoVision 2 / CV2 FAQ.

Q: Is it NTSC only. ?
A: PAL versions are possible, as both the video processor and the video encoder can be placed in PAL mode.

Q: So will the GUI make a difference in game. ?
A: GUI functions is to allow the user to select from different fonts and use them with legacy games.
The selected font will replace the default font in the flash BIOS, so the change will be persistent between game sessions. It is just cosmetic change.

Q: Do we have to replace the U2 BIOS in our CV. ?
A: The new BIOS (BIOS XP) will be part of the Opgrade Module, so no need to replace the BIOS inside the CV.
But better yet, the BIOS XP will be upgradable, so new functions would be added any time.

Q: Would Donkey Kong Arcade at least require the Memory Module to play. ?
A: Yep, it uses the extra RAM in the Memory Module, and it should also use the MegaCart 2 to keep the high scores.

Q: Can power be turned off to the CV, turn it on the next day and the high scores will still be on there. ?
A: Yes, correct. The MegaCart 2 has quite a bit of flash memory, so stuff can be saved.
For instance, when King's Valley is released, it will include a screen editor allowing new stages to be created and saved on the Cartridge.

Q: Would it be possible to make a Arcade port of Bezerk. Dreaming of hearing " Chicken... Fight like a Robot!". ?
A: Yep, with the new sound "chip" it could be possible, ADPCM is almost 100% CPU free.

Q: Would also apply to the sound IC. ?
A: The Texas PSG can still be used, so no problem there.

Q: Would it be possible to update the Bios XP, and if so, how . ?
A: Yes, that would be possible using different methods.

Q: Would an ADPCM device be absolutely necessary to do the voices in Wizard of Wor. ?
A: Yes, but the problem isn't exactly speed, but timing, we use the Oki MSM9842.
It’s a best solution. Basically we have a number of sampling frequencies to select from, ranging from 4kHz to 32Khz, ADPCM, ADPCM 2, 8-bit PCM and even 16-bits PCM.

Q: What is the multi plug for on the pcb. ?
A:

Y   That is the parallel port connector. Two 8-bit bi-directional I/O ports to be used with special controllers, CV<to>CV connection or CV<to>PC connection. Should be fun...

Q: Will It be Yamaha V9990 or V9958, or perhaps both of them at CV2 ?
A: Right, both. That is the way the V9990 was originally intended to be used. The trick is the encoder, the V7040 (notice the ASCII copyright over it, thus a MSX related device). That is the video imposer and encoder. You can select V9958, V9990 or both superimposed.
The V9958 gives you the legacy modes and a few improvements like hardware scroll and color palettes, while the V9990 gives you the advanced modes.

Q:

Will Coleco games operate on a CV2, whose resolution is eg. 256 x 212 ?

A: All the legacy modes are still 256x192

Q: Will an inserted original ColecoVision CV1 game inserted in CV2 switch automatically between those two formats ?
A: It boots as CV2, the BIOS check for a CV1 cartridge, and if one is found switch the system to CV1 and disable everything isn't suppose to exist, set legacy video modes, etc.

Q:

Will a game For example Donkey Kong Arcade made for the ColecoVision Memory Module also work in CV2 ?

A: Technically yes. That is something we are still discussing.

Q: A game made for CV2 will not work in the Memory Module, if i understand it right ?
A: Considering how small the market is, I would like to avoid having 3 different platforms.
In fact Andre' thinks that if the CV2 is feasible then we should simply cancel the CMM, but I am still giving it some thought.

Q:

Others who want to produce games for the CV2 and its features, are they forced to use the Mega Cart 2 ?

A: No, they are completely independent.

Q: Will it still be possible using the Steering Wheel and Roller Controller via the new CV2.
A: Driving controller and roller should work.

Q:

Based on the most current vision of what the Memory Module is going to be and what the CV2 is going to be, what exactly are the differences ?

A: The CV2 should be almost 100% compatible with the original CV. And I say almost because we don't plan to have the expansion port.
The differences is like night and day, better graphics, AV Out, Stereo and Speech sound and much much more.

Q: Who is André ?
A: Andre is Eduardo's cooperating partner from Nurve Networks LLC.

Q: Would you let RWB distribute and promote the new Colecovision 2 for you.?
A: Even if we were planning to make dozens of thousands of CV2s, RWB doesn't do any distribution. They just buy brands and license them.
Q: I saw something about SD cards or CF cards, will this have a memory card slot and what will it be used for ?
A: It will play ROMs right from the card.
Q: About controllers, included or not included? Have you considered making the keypad part of the console ?
A: We don't know yet. But you know what, from the core CV user point-of-view, I don't think that would be a big problem.
New controllers would be nice, but we can always use the old ones.

Q: Why not go all the way and build the Atari expansion port right in, and have TWO cartridge slots ?
A: That would require Atari chips, would rise costs, etc.

Q: What are you looking to implement in this first CV2 prototype ?
A: A CV1, but using a V9958. We should see soon.

Q: Will the V9958 be a separate chip or is it part of the V9990 ?.
A: They were created to be used as a dual chipeset solution.
With the V9958 + V9990 you get full backward compatibility and 16-bit quality graphics.

Q: Are the SCC and YM2151 very different (and perhaps even incompatible) sound chips ?
A: Yep, completely different chips. SCC is like PSG, but you can enter a 32 sampling points waveform for each channel.
And it has 5 channels. YM2151 is... well, FM. And have 8 channels. And of course YM2151 sounds much better than SCC.

Q: If you had to compare the CV2 to another machine, technologically speaking, which would it be ?
A: I would say it is somewhere in between the Genesis and the SNES both graphic, sound and CPU wise.
Graphic and sound should be better than Genesis, but not as good as SNES in most cases, CPU should be about same level as SNES, not as good as the Genesis 68K.

Q: Will be "difficult" to keep the Colecovision spirit for the CV2 games ?
A: I believe it would a matter of approaching the CV2 with fresh eyes and open mind.
The thing about the CV spirit isn't graphics or sound, but the type of games being produced during the early 80s.

Q: Will the Oki MSM 9842 be used in the new CV 2. ?
A: Yep, the OKI is going to the CV 2, good not just for voices, but for all kind of very complex sound effects OpCode call it ColecoVoice !
